Schuyler Inn Family Shelter

Transitional Housing and Family Support Services
in Albany County.

The Schuyler Inn provides transitional housing and support services for families in Albany County who are facing housing problems. Residents receive safe rooms, three meals a day, and access to classes and activities that help with money skills, parenting, and daily living. These services give families a steady place to regroup while they work on their next steps.

Our case managers meet with each family to understand their needs and connect them with helpful community programs. Together, they set clear goals for housing, stability, and future planning. We focus on building practical skills and creating a simple, realistic path that helps families move toward long-term independence at a pace that works for them.

Schuyler Kids

Enrichment, Stability, and After-School Support for Children at the Schuyler Inn

Schuyler Kids is the children’s enrichment and after-school program at the Schuyler Inn Family Shelter. Designed to bring structure, safety, and encouragement to children experiencing homelessness, the program provides meaningful daily routines that help kids continue learning, growing, and thriving during a period of transition.

A Safe, Supportive Place to Learn and Grow

Children at the Schuyler Inn face many challenges beyond their control. Schuyler Kids creates a welcoming, predictable environment where they can:

  • Settle in after the school day

  • Engage in age-appropriate activities

  • Build confidence and social skills

  • Experience moments of joy and normalcy

  • Feel supported by caring adults and peers

This space becomes a cornerstone of stability for families working toward long-term housing.

After-School Routine

Every weekday afternoon, students gather in a designated program space for a calm and structured after-school session. This routine helps children decompress from the school day, reconnect with peers, and participate in activities that promote creativity, learning, and healthy expression.

A typical after-school period includes:

  • A transition period to unwind and reset

  • Light structure to help students refocus

  • Guided, age-appropriate activities

  • Time for reading, games, art, or quiet exploration

Homework Support & Academic Stability

School stability is critical for children experiencing homelessness. Schuyler Kids integrates homework time into the daily routine to help students stay aligned with their academic responsibilities.

Homework support includes:

  • A quiet, organized environment for completing assignments

  • Guidance with classwork and school expectations

  • Encouragement to build positive study habits

  • Consistent routines that reduce stress and promote confidence

With this support, children can keep pace with their peers, maintain progress in school, and feel capable even in difficult circumstances.

Why Schuyler Kids Matters

For families living at the Schuyler Inn, life can feel uncertain. Schuyler Kids ensures that children still have a place where they are seen, supported, and encouraged to be themselves.

The program offers:

  • Stability in the midst of transition

  • Predictable routines that restore a sense of normalcy

  • Emotional and academic support

  • Opportunities for learning, creativity, and growth

Most importantly, Schuyler Kids helps children know that they matter, and that their futures remain full of possibility.

Events

EVENTS at Schuyler Inn

Trunk or Treat - October 24th

The Schuyler Inn recently hosted a festive Trunk or Treat celebration that brought families, staff, and community partners together for an evening of safe Halloween fun. Cars lined the parking area, each one decorated with creative themes ranging from superheroes to fall harvest scenes. Children moved from trunk to trunk gathering candy, showing off their costumes, and enjoying a night filled with laughter and excitement.

The event created a joyful break from the daily stresses families face and gave kids a chance to simply be kids — smiling, exploring, and celebrating the season with their peers.

Story Time - Monthly

Once a month, we celebrate a wonderful Story Time with Sherry Bhatti, the Children’s Librarian from the Menands Public Library, a tradition she has lovingly upheld at the Schuyler Inn for nearly five years. Sherry, along with volunteers Alisha and Reja, spend the afternoon reading books with the children, sharing activity sheets, and guiding a hands-on craft that everyone enjoys.

Their monthly visits continue to spark creativity, nurture a love of reading, and give children a warm, welcoming space where they feel seen and valued. We remain deeply grateful for the time, talent, and dedication Sherry and her team bring to our families month after month.

Regeneron Playground Expansion - October

The Schuyler Inn recently completed an exciting playground expansion project thanks to the incredible volunteer team from Regeneron. Volunteers spent the day installing new play equipment, refreshing the outdoor space, and improving the safety and functionality of the area where children gather each day.

The upgraded playground now offers expanded opportunities for active play, social connection, and outdoor exploration. For families navigating a difficult chapter in their lives, this revitalized space has become a bright spot — a place where children can laugh, climb, run, and enjoy the freedom and happiness every child deserves.
